To begin with, he is the youngest of five children in the family of Philip Taptiklis and Jane Martin. He was educated at the Aylesbury Grammar School. Subsequently, he entered the University of Nottingham and graduated with a degree in philosophy in 2007. Since he was young, he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School of Dramatic Art.
At first, Theo was seeking a career as a singer, in fact, he belonged to several independent bands but they never released any albums. In 2009, he accompanied his girlfriend Ruth Kearny to audition for a role in “A Passionate Woman”, a television series based on the 1992 play written by the screenwriter Kay Mellor. Initially, Theo was not looking for any role, just auditioned for fun, however, he was selected to star in the series in 2010. The same year, he appeared as a guest in the television series “Downton Abbey” playing Kemal Pamuk, a Turkish diplomat. He then appeared in the movie “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger”, and in 2011 starred in the first season of the supernatural drama television series “Bedlam”. After the culmination of that season, Theo appeared in film “The Inbetweeners Movie” as James, which received mixed reviews, but still became a blockbuster, raising almost $90 million at the box office, also adding to his net worth.
At the beginning of 2012, he gave life to the character of David in “Underworld: Awakening”, and despite receiving negative reviews, the film grossed $170 million dollars worldwide, almost three times its initial budget of $60 million. Subsequently, he made a guest appearance in the film “The Domino Effect”, and appeared in two episodes of the series “Case Sensitive and “Room at the Top”, playing the roles of Aidan Harper and Jack Wales respectively. In 2013, Theo starred in the series “Golden Boy” aired on CBS – in its first episode, the series earned $10.56 million, and throughout the season, the number of viewers varied between seven and 10 million. In 2014, Theo was chosen for the starring role of Tobias “Four” Eaton in the film “Divergent”, a film adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Veronica Roth, which had mixed reviews, but the film still became a blockbuster, raising $288 million, more than three times its initial budget of $85 million. His performance earned him a prize at that year’s Teen Choice Awards for the Best Action Movie Actor. In addition to this, at the People’s Choice Awards the actor won the award for the Best Film Duo together with Shailene Woodley. Thanks to the success of the film, Summit Entertainment confirmed a sequel called “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” that was released in 2015, and Theo reprised this role in 2016 in the sequel “Divergent 3: Beyond the Wall”, and in 2017 in the last part of the Divergent 4 saga “The Divergent Series: Ascendant”. The same year, he became the new face of the brand Hugo Boss.
In 2018, the films “London Fields” and “Zoe” with James are scheduled for release.
Finally, in the personal life of the actor, he is probably still single – the only clue to his private life is a relationship with Ruth Kearney, an Irish actress, but that ended in 2009.

1 | Even though I'm an actor, I don't love sharing everything about myself. It's always good to keep a little bit for yourself. [Interview, September 1, 2015] |
2 | What is interesting, as well, is how much power homicide detectives have and how much respect. They are kind of rock stars, especially in New York. There are not that many of them. |
3 | People say that New Yorkers aren't friendly, but I think they're more friendly than Londoners. Here there is a front-footed nature of Americans. You can go out on a night out and meet 10 random people and stay in touch with them, whereas that's not going to happen in the same way in London. |
4 | New York cops are very specific in terms of the way they talk and the way they handle themselves. All these clichés that, as an Englishman, I thought were from a bygone era or were a bit of poetic license with cop shows - the more you hang out with them, the more you realize how real that jargon is. |
5 | What I like about the 'Underworld' thing is that it's a mix of cool genres, as well as creating its own message. |
6 | I know there's Brooklyn and all the boroughs, but Manhattan specifically is so condensed that the energy is very vibrant. Everywhere you look there is something happening. |
7 | I think you can tell when a New York show isn't shot in the city. It's so iconic and has such a specific energy. |
8 | I don't think I believe in ghosts, per se. But, my nearest experience was when I went on a weekend away and was in a bar in England, years ago, with an ex-girlfriend. I heard this scratching. I was about to go to bed and I was thinking, 'It's an old ghost.' I could hear this noise, but I couldn't work out where it was coming from. |
9 | I've got two brothers and two sisters, so there's five of us and we're all very close, which is cool. |
10 | In Britain, you do your job. When you do an American TV show, there is a sense of being one with the crew, and there is a leadership element, which was a learning curve for me because it is very different culturally. In Britain, you just do it, leave and say, 'Thanks.' |
11 | I was in the school plays, I did a lot of music. I carried on through university for short films and loads of plays. |
12 | I know I often get a job because of how I look. I hope that I keep the job because of how I act. |

Theo's paternal grandparents moved to New Zealand, where his father was raised. Theo's mother's family is from Glasgow, Scotland. |
