His parents were Robert Joseph Stewart (1904–1990) and Elsie Rebecca Gilbart (1906–1996). While his father was Scottish and had been a master builder in Leith, Elsie was English and had grown up in Upper Holloway in North London.

Following their 1928 nuptials, they lived in Scotland, where they produced two sons and two daughters before relocating to Highgate.

Rod arrived eight years after his younger sibling during World War II. He was given special treatment because he was the youngest and recalls a “fantastically wonderful” childhood.
